Postgame: Will Borgen's revenge, Kraken blitz Buffalo in 7-4 win

Jared McCann and Mason Appleton each pocketed a pair of goals and the Seattle Kraken never trailed, scoring twice shorthanded in the first period and reaching a season and early franchise high in goals for a game to defeat the Buffalo Sabres 7-4 on Monday before 10,004 at KeyBank Center.

Dealing with a second period loss of Jordan Eberle to a lower body injury, the Kraken got a three point game out of Brandon Tanev while opening three separate three-goal leads, before trading goals with Buffalo in the last 1:33 of the game.

Will Borgen, an expansion draft pick plucked from Buffalo four months ago, returned to his former home ice to record his first career NHL point (assist) along with three blocked shots (totaling eight in his first two games of the season).

The Kraken (8-13-1, 17 points) have won four of their last five games, inching to within four points of the idle Los Angeles Kings for sixth place in the Pacific Division.

Notes:

• Carson Soucy had the honor of scoring the first shorthanded goal in Kraken history, a slap shot set up by Yanni Gourde at 5:47 of the first period
• Gourde's assist collected the 200th point of his NHL career
• Head coach Dave Hakstol's brief update after the game on Eberle declined any long term prognosis, and said, "we'll evaluate him through the night and tomorrow morning, and then we'll have a little better idea of where we're at once we get to Wednesday morning."
• Mason Appleton earned the second multi goal game of his career
• Jared McCann became the second player from the Kraken to reach double digits in goals, trailing Eberle by one (10)
• Per NHL Stats, the Kraken became only the second expansion team in 41 years to score two shorthanded goals in a game, and the first since Minnesota in 2000-01.
• Goaltender Chris Driedger (32 saves) picked up his second straight win
