Pete Carroll: Jadeveon Clowney, Jarran Reed to play against Vikings

Seattle Seahawks v Arizona Cardinals

RENTON -- Despite being listed as questionable on the final injury report of the week, Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said that both defensive end Jadeveon Clowney and defensive tackle Jarran Reed will play Monday night against the Minnesota Vikings.

Clowney missed last week's game against the Philadelphia Eagles due to a sports hernia-related injury that required a consultation from Dr. William Meyers in Philadelphia last Friday. Meanwhile, Reed was injured in the Eagles game when teammate Rasheem Green fell on the back of his left ankle.

Clowney was limited in practice the last two days with a greater workload on Friday before being eased back on Saturday.

"He did well yesterday and he's fine. He should be ready to go," Carroll said.

Clowney said Saturday that he's had a similar injury to this before during his rookie season with the Houston Texans. While a knee injury ultimately ended his first season in the NFL, the hernia issue also was addressed with a surgery after his season came to an end.

Clowney said the injury surfaced during the second quarter of the team's win over the San Francisco 49ers and he continued to play through the issue. Meyers took a look at an MRI of the injury last week ahead of Seattle's game with the Eagles and Clowney received some treatment in hopes of continuing to play through the injury the rest of the season.

“I've had one before. I kind of knew what I was dealing with," Clowney said. It’s just something I have to maintain and manage throughout the rest of the season, but I need to be here playing right now. ... It's not as bad. It's not even that crazy. I just got to make sure I stay on top of it and keep it from flaring up anything going on. During the game, stuff is going to happen. Being physical with guys you expect to put strain on it a little bit throughout the game. Just hopefully no setbacks week-to-week."

Meyers is the doctor many teams use as a specialist for core muscle injuries. He handled sports hernia surgeries for multiple Seahawks through the years including Marshawn Lynch, Doug Baldwin and Mike Morgan. Also, former Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano.

"I'm sure after the season probably (it will require surgery). As of right now, I've just got to push through some stuff," Clowney said.

"I told them to hold that off. I'm trying to finish this season. If it was a lot of games left it would be different but we ain't got many. ... Just told them I think I can get through those and help this team."

Defensive tackle Al Woods, linebacker Mychal Kendricks and tight end Luke Willson are also questionable to play.

Woods had a sore foot that surfaced during the week that led to the team giving him a lighter load in practice on Saturday. Kendricks' hamstring tightened up on Friday and they gave him the day off on Saturday to allow the injury to clear up. He'll be a game-time decision on Monday.

"This is this time of the year where these guys aren't going to be perfect but they all feel like they can play and they're excited to play in the game. Until they don't and can't, we're counting on these guys," Carroll said.

Willson is three weeks removed from a pulled hamstring sustained against the San Francisco 49ers and has a chance to play Monday as well, but Carroll noted they will be cautious to make sure the injury doesn't persist.

"He made really good progress. He was flying up and down the field. We've got to be careful with this one because we just don't want it to linger so we'll make a late decision on this one," Carroll said.

Fullback Nick Bellore and cornerback Neiko Thorpe are both doubtful to play. Bellore injured his quadriceps against the Eagles last week while Thorpe missed the Eagles game due to a groin injury.

Additionally, six different players with listed on the injury report due to illness on Saturday. Receivers Tyler Lockett and David Moore, defensive tackle Poona Ford and center Jordan Roos all did not practice. Cornerback Tre Flowers was limited and linebacker Shaquem Griffin was a full participant.

All are expected to play against the Vikings, but Carroll noted they've had to tell some guys to stay away for now.

"We [had] some guys stay home," Carroll said.
