Chris Carson placed on injured reserve; Rees Odhiambo out of hospital

Indianapolis Colts v Seattle Seahawks

RENTON -- The Seahawks placed starting running back Chris Carson on injured reserve on Monday after he sustained a fractured leg and high-ankle sprain in Sunday night's game against the Indianapolis Colts.

"Chris is going to get operated on tomorrow," head coach Pete Carroll said on Monday afternoon. "It's a surgery that applies to a really serious high-ankle sprain. He does have a little fracture (in his leg) but that's not the issue. It's similar to what Thomas (Rawls) had a while back. It is similar to that."

With less than seven minutes remaining in the game, Carson was injured when linebacker Jon Bostic landed on the back of his leg making a tackle. Carson subsequently got bent backward over Bostic with his leg pinned beneath the Colts defender. Trainers quickly ran on the field to tend to Carson before putting his leg in an air cast and taking him off the field on the back of a cart.

Carroll said there is an outside chance that Carson could return to the team this season. Seattle did not have to designate him as a possible candidate to return from injured reserve. They can just wait and see how he heals and whether they have enough time left in the year to get him back.

The leg fracture does not need to be addressed via surgery, only the ankle sprain.

Carson started three of Seattle's four games this season at tailback. He amassed 208 yards rushing with seven receptions for 59 yards and a touchdown before going down with the injury Sunday night.

Rees Odhiambo:

Left tackle Rees Odhiambo was released from the hospital on Monday after being taken for evaluation Sunday night. Odhiambo was struggling to breath in the locker room after the game.

"He's been released from the hospital," Carroll said. "They took a good look at him. ... He's got a bruised sternum and he's fine in all ways. We're not sure what that means for the week but it's nothing beyond that."

Odhiambo had been injured in the third quarter when Colts defensive end Jabaal Sheard blocked him in the chest on an interception return by Malik Hooker. Odhimabo didn't miss a snap and was able to return to the game on Seattle's next possession. After the game, he began experiencing shortness of breath and needed assistance from the medical staff. He was tended to for at least 15 minutes before a stretcher was brought in to take his to the hospital for evaluation.

If Odhiambo can't play this week, it would likely fall to either Matt Tobin or Isaiah Battle to start in his place.

"Matt has really done a great job in pressing that he can do so many things," Carroll said. "He can both sides, both guards, both tackle spots. He's played the big tight end spot for us. His experience has really shown and that gives us tremendous flexibility, which really helps.

"Isaiah Battle has been very impressive. He is a tremendous looking young kid now and he's got a chance to be a really good player. He's growing with us, not as experienced, and so he has to learn a little bit more of our stuff and our style and all that. ... We'll see how he does and see what happens during the weeks ahead here but I wouldn't be surprised if he does end up playing some time and does a really nice job for us."

Cliff Avril:

Defensive end Cliff Avril was kicked in the jaw trying to tackle Colts quarterback Jacoby Brissett from behind in the first quarter. He left the game and did return due to a neck injury.

"Cliff got serious stingers in the game and it's going to be a while for us to figure out what he's got," Carroll said. "It will take time to make sure we get him clear and figured out. There's going to be some tests and stuff like that, so I don't have any timeline on that at all but we're going to take care of him and make sure we take out time and do this really well to look after him."

Avril was seen squeezing his hands and shaking his arms seemingly attempting to restore some feeling to his arms after the play.

The Seahawks signed defensive lineman Quinton Jefferson off the Los Angeles Rams practice squad on Monday to fill the roster vacancy created by Carson's move to injured reserve.

Jefferson was a fifth-round pick of the Seahawks in 2016 and played in three games before a knee injury ended his rookie season. Jefferson was with the team through training camp this year before being released during final roster cuts. He was claimed off waivers by the Rams before they eventually released him and moved him to their practice squad.

Jeremy Lane:

Cornerback Jeremy Lane injured his groin on the fifth play of the game and did not return. He was replaced by Shaquill Griffin and Justin Coleman for the remainder of the contest.

"He has a groin pull that we need to see how severe that is and what that means for the week. It was enough to keep him out of the game so there will be some concern about that," Carroll said.

Carroll was extremely complimentary of the way Griffin and Coleman played in Lane's place.

"I thought what was really good was the play of Shaq jumping up and playing corner and also Justin Coleman coming in at nickel. He did a really good job there," Carroll said. "That gave us a chance to play really good defense with those guys up."

C.J. Prosise and Neiko Thorpe:

Running back C.J. Prosise and cornerback Neiko Thorpe both missed Sunday's game due to ankle injuries.

Prosise took part in pregame warmups and looked good to Carroll's eyes, giving him hope that Prosise will be back this week.

Prosise was injured last week in Tennessee while Thorpe has missed the last two games after being injured against the San Francisco 49ers.
