Reports: Seahawks re-signing quarterback Geno Smith to one-year deal

San Francisco 49ers v Seattle Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks are re-signing backup quarterback Geno Smith to a one-year contract, according to multiple reports.

The reunion was first reported by Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times.

Smith spent the 2019 season in Seattle as the backup to Russell Wilson and will be the favorite to hold that role again in 2020. The Seahawks brought in former Washington State quarterback Anthony Gordon in as an undrafted free agent and will also be in the competition for the job.

Smith did not appear in a single regular season game for the Seahawks last year as Wilson took every snap at quarterback for the team. He played in three preseason games for the team last year, completing 18 of 34 passes for 282 yards and two touchdowns during his preseason work.

The Seahawks were always going to need a veteran quarterback to the rotation before training camp is scheduled to begin in July. The familiarity with Seattle made Smith an obvious candidate given the lack of offseason work across the league.

A former second-round pick of the New York Jets, Smith is entering his eighth season in the league. He has played for the Jets, New York Giants, Los Angeles Chargers and Seahawks.
