The Seattle Seahawks are promoting Dave Canales to passing game coordinator and Austin Davis to quarterbacks coach, according to Albert Breer of TheMMQB.com.
Canales spent last season as the team's quarterbacks coach with Davis joining the staff as an offensive assistant under offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer. The report from Breer indicates other teams were interested in Davis from other teams and the promotions of Canales and Davis allows Seattle to retain both coaches on their staff.
Davis spent the 2017 as the backup quarterback to Russell Wilson for the Seahawks. He is the last quarterback other than Wilson to take snaps in a regular season game, appearing in three games for Seattle that season. Davis will now have the full title as quarterbacks coach despite being six months younger than Wilson.
Canales has served on the Seahawks' staff ever since Pete Carroll was named head coach in 2010. He has been an quality control coach, wide receivers coach, assistant quarterbacks coach, quarterbacks coach and now passing game coordinator.
Schottenheimer will continue to oversee the entirety of the Seahawks' offense and be involved in the direct coaching of Wilson and the quarterbacks as well.
Seahawks awarded three compensatory picks:
The NFL handed out its allotment of 32 compensatory draft picks to teams on Tuesday. The Seahawks received three out of maximum four possible compensatory picks as reimbursement for players that departed the team in free agency last year.
Seattle received picks in the third (No. 101 overall), fourth (No. 144) and sixth (No. 214) rounds to add to their collection of selections for next month's NFL Draft.
The formula that determines the compensatory pick distribution is a bit convoluted but it essentially weighs the number of free agents a team signed compared to the number of free agents they lost along with the production and quality of play gap between the two. The Seahawks saw safety Earl Thomas, cornerback Justin Coleman, defensive tackle Shamar Stephen, guard J.R. Sweezy and quarterback Brett Hundley leave last year while adding only guard Mike Iupati and kicker Jason Myers during the applicable free agency period.
