Texas Police Officer Who Fatally Shot Woman In Her Own Home Resigns

The Forth Worth, Texas, police officer who fatally shot a 28-year-old woman through a window in her own home tendered his resignation on Monday (October 14). The officer was identified as Aaron Dean and had been on the force since 2018.

Dean is still facing potential criminal charges and civil rights violations and has not been cooperating with investigators. Interim Police Chief Ed Kraus said that if Dean had not resigned, he would have been facing termination.

"Had the officer not resigned, I would have fired him for violations for several policies, including our use of force policy, our de-escalation policy, and unprofessional conduct," Kraus told reporters.

Dean was responding to an "open structure call" at the home of Atatiana Jefferson after her neighbor called the police because he noticed her front door was open. Jefferson was at home playing video games with her eight-year-old nephew when she heard noises outside her window.

When she went into the bedroom to investigate the sound, Dean saw her from outside and ordered her to put her hands up. Before giving her a chance to respond and without identifying himself as a police officer, he fired a single, fatal shot through the window.

Jefferson's family is calling on authorities to arrest Dean and charge him with murder.

"She didn't do anything wrong, but she's inside of her home, trying to protect her home and my son that's inside. She's not a threat. She's a college graduate," Ashley Carr, Jefferson's older sister, said during a press conference. "You know, you want to see justice, but justice don't bring my sister back."

Investigators found a gun in her bedroom, but did not say if she was holding when she was shot.
