Ahtyba Rubin released as Seahawks begin roster cuts

Kansas City Chiefs v Seattle Seahawks

Following the acquisition of Sheldon Richardson from the New York Jets on Friday, the Seahawks decided they could move on from defensive tackle Ahtyba Rubin.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Seahawks elected to release Rubin after trying to trade him over the last 24 hours.

Rubin signed a one-year deal with Seattle in 2015 and was rewarded with a three-year deal worth a total of $12 million in March, 2016. Ultimately, Rubin received just the base $5.5 million of the deal that was fully guaranteed.

Richardson's addition made Rubin's position somewhat redundant. Richardson will certainly start, likely alongside Jarran Reed, with Rubin being relegated to a rotational run defender. It's not a surprise the Seahawks would decided against paying Rubin $2.2 million this season to serve in such a limited role.

Nevertheless, Rubin had been a solid contributor through his two seasons in Seattle. He appeared in all 32 games over the last two years with 75 tackles, three sacks, three forced fumbles (all last year) and an interception.

Other players that reportedly have been informed they will be released include:

RB Mike Davis
RB Alex Collins
WR David Moore
WR Darreus Rogers
C Will Pericak
C Joey Hunt
T Tyrus Thompson
DT Quinton Jefferson
CB Pierre Desir
