There was one name in particular lingering around KJR’s Sports Pit today: Matt Barkley.

Hugh Millen and Jason LaCanfora from CBS Sports shared their thoughts on the prospect of Seattle drafting the USC quarterback. Mitch said he has high hopes the Seahawks will draft him in round two of the draft today.

“I am beyond curious,” Mitch said. “If curiosity killed the cat, I am a lion.”

The move would raise a collective eyebrow in Seattle, where Russell Wilson is already entrenched as Pete Carroll’s signal-caller. For that reason, Millen was skeptical the Seahawks would be able to draft Carroll’s former one at USC.

LaCanfora was much more open to drafting the 6’2” 230-pound quarterback. He said John Schneider could favor the pick because of his track record: he was part of a Green Bay front office that drafted Aaron Rodgers when Brett Favre was the starter.

“If you’re sitting there, why wouldn’t you consider him?” LaCanfora asked. “If you know him, you can develop him.”

The Packers’ front office also drafted Louisville Quarterback Brian Brohm in the second round after Rodgers had become the starter.

Although Millen thinks Carroll will “take a peek” at Barkley if he’s available at number 56, the Seahawks are more likely to look for an impact player who can contribute right away. The team faces some question at wide receiver, guard and especially the 3-tech defensive tackle, a position Alan Branch vacated in free agency.

But the best available player may be the prospect on Schneider’s mind, so the Seahawks aren’t bound to any positional needs. Not even backup quarterback, where the Seahawks could add Barkley if they see fit.

“I just think you’re sitting here right now, poised to really make a legitimate Superbowl run,” Millen said. “[If you draft Barkley] I just think that you miss on an impactful player that can help you right now.”

Watch the draft at 3:30 PT on ESPN or the NFL Network.
