Baseball and sports is a pretty funny deal. Look at the three big contributors on Tuesday night: James Paxton, Corey Hart and Justin Smoak. All three had question marks surrounding them before the season started, but all three were instrumental in the home opening win.
Paxton settled down after having a rough first inning and pitched fantastically before leaving with an injury.
Smoak continues to hit in the early season. One thing that should not go unnoticed with Smoak, are the at-bats following his first where his hit to right field fell short of going out and landed in the glove of the right fielder at the warning track. Smoak didn’t allow that to bother him later in the game. Last years version of Smoak would have been bothered by that and probably would have voiced his displeasure after the game.
And what can you say about Hart…two home runs, the first giving Seattle the lead and the second was an add-on. The season has started slowly for Hart, but if he can give Seattle that type of power this season then that $5 million dollar investment could be a steal.
All in all it was a great start for the M’s on the home stand and it gave further evidence that their start on the road may not be a fluke.
