Oakland, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Justin Smoak brought in the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning and the Seattle Mariners took the opener of a traditional doubleheader, 6-4, over the Oakland Athletics.

After both teams stranded runners at third in the ninth, Seattle took the lead for good in the 10th. Smoak's two-out groundball bounced off first baseman Daric Barton's glove and allowed Michael Saunders to cross home plate. Kyle Seager brought an insurance run with a line-drive single to right that scored Robinson Cano from second.

Corey Hart and Mike Zunino both hit solo home runs and Smoak drove in two runs as the Mariners extended their winning streak to five games. The triumph guaranteed the Mariners a fourth straight series win.

Yoervis Medina (2-1) earned the victory after pitching a scoreless ninth. Starter Felix Hernandez gave up four runs -- three earned -- on 11 hits and failed to record a strikeout in 6 1/3 innings of work.

John Jaso, Josh Donaldson, Brandon Moss, and Barton each drove in a run for Oakland, which lost its third straight.

Ryan Cook (0-1) took the loss after giving up both runs in the 10th. Dan Straily, who started the game, allowed three runs on three hits across six frames.

The two teams will conclude the four-game set with the latter half of the twin bill.

Hart led off the second inning with a solo homer over the wall in left center field to open the scoring for Seattle.

The A's got one back in the fourth. Yoenis Cespedes singled to right and Jed Lowrie reached on Brad Miller's fielding error. A batter later, Cespedes rushed home from third on Barton's groundout to tie the game.

Zunino's line drive to left field just cleared the wall to put the Mariners ahead in the top of the fifth.

James Jones walked to lead off the sixth for Seattle. He stole second and advanced to third on Cano's groundout. Hart walked and stole second before getting doubled up at third on Smoak's sacrifice fly, which scored Jones to make it a 3-1 game.

Oakland went ahead, 4-3, in the seventh. Gentry's line-drive double moved Eric Sogard to third, after Sogard's leadoff single, Jaso then singled in Sogard. Donaldson's sacrifice fly scored Gentry and Moss' RBI triple off the left- center field wall plated Jaso and ended Hernandez's outing.

The Mariners tied the game in the next frame. Saunders and Stefen Romero both reached on one-out walks before Cano plated Saunders with an RBI single up the middle.

Fernando Rodney pitched a scoreless 10th to secure his ninth save of the season.

Earlier in the fourth, Coco Crisp left the game after suffering a strained neck. He made a sensational leaping catch into the right-center field wall, robbing Kyle Seager of an extra base hit to end the frame.
