PEORIA, Ariz. – Seattle fell behind early and never recovered en route to a 7-2 loss to the San Diego Padres in Cactus League play in front of 12,084 fans at Peoria Stadium.

Seattle took a brief lead in the first inning as Brad Miller reached base on a hit up the middle and scored from first as Robinson Cano doubled down the right field line.

Starter James Paxton allowed three runs on four hits in four innings of work, with all four hits and a walk coming in the second inning after retiring the side in order in the first. On the spring, he has posted a 3.18 ERA (6 ER, 17.0 IP) with 12 strikeouts in five starts.

After San Diego got a single run in the fifth off of reliever Zach Miner, Seattle countered with a two-out rally that got a run back after Abraham Almonte walked and Miller drove him in with an RBI double.

Down 7-2, the Mariners got a rally going in the eighth inning, loading the bases with singles by Tyler Smith, Leury Bonilla and Cole Gillespie but Padres reliever Tim Stauffer got out of the inning by striking out Ty Kelly before getting Austin Wilson to ground out on a play that was upheld after review by the umpires.

Miller finished the game 2-for-3 with a run scored, a double and an RBI and is now hitting .463 (19x41) with 14 runs, two doubles, four triples, four home runs, nine RBI and a 1.522 OPS in 14 games.
