HILLSBORO, Ore. – Jake Zokan pitched seven shutout innings and Austin Wilson drove in three runs to lead the Everett AquaSox to a 6-0 victory over the Hillsboro Hops Monday at Hillsboro Ballpark. Zokan allowed just two hits and Brock Hebert broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning with a one-out triple that scored Daniel Torres. Chantz Mack had three hits and scored a pair of runs for the AquaSox, who have a chance to take the series Tuesday.

Zokan turned in his best start for the AquaSox this season. The lefty, a ninth round pick by the Mariners this June, was efficient with his pitches, striking out just two and walking only one. It was enough to baffle the Hops’ hitters, however, as Zokan gave up just the two hits and didn’t allow a runner past first base after the second inning. With the win, Zokan improved to 2-2 with Everett.

With Zokan throwing strikes on the hill, the ‘Sox scored five runs in the fifth and sixth to put this one away. After Hebert tripled in the fifth, an errant throw on a drop-third strike allowed him to come home and give the Frogs a 2-0 lead. The AquaSox tacked on three more runs in the sixth. After Reggie Lawson and Mack singled, Wilson drove a ball to center field for a two-RBI double, advancing to third on the throw to the plate. Phillips Castillo then scored Wilson with a ground ball to make it 5-0 AquaSox.

Back-to-back doubles by Mack and Wilson in the eighth added an insurance run and wrapped up the scoring Monday. Nate Koneski and Cameron Copping each worked a 1-2-3 inning in relief of Zokan to snuff out any chance of a Hops’ comeback and seal the series-tying victory.

Blake Forslund (1-1) took the loss for Hillsboro. The AquaSox had 10 hits Monday, as seven of nine starters picked up at least one apiece. Mack is hitting .625 over his last four games and has raised his season average to .271. Wilson picked up his eighth, ninth, and tenth RBI on the season.

Everett moved back above .500 for the second half, improving to 4-3 and 27-18 overall while Hillsboro fell to 4-3, 15-30 and out of a first-place tie with Eugene in the second half standings. The AquaSox and Hillsboro conclude their five-game series Tuesday, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM. Lars Huijer (6-1, 1.85) will attempt to become the first pitcher in the NWL with seven wins. Ross Gerdeman (0-4, 3.59) will oppose him for the Hops. The AquaSox come home Wednesday, July 31st to take on the Boise Hawks in a five-game series before the All-Star break.
